How Long Does the Camí de Cavalls Take?

The Camí de Cavalls route is approximately 184 km around the coast of Menorca. Most hikers complete the full self-guided walk in 7–9 days depending on their pace and how many rest days they include.

Fast walkers and trail runners can complete the route in as few as 5 days, while those who prefer a more relaxed self-guided trip with time to explore beaches and villages might take 10–12 days.

Which Direction Should I Walk the Camí de Cavalls?

The Camí de Cavalls is traditionally walked anticlockwise, starting and finishing in Maó. This takes you north along the wild and rugged northern coastline first, through Favàritx and along the dramatic north coast to Ciutadella, before turning south and east along the gentler southern shores back to Maó.

Walking anticlockwise means you tackle the more challenging and spectacular northern sections while your legs are fresh. The southern coast, with its more developed resorts and easier terrain, provides a natural wind-down towards the finish.

The trail is waymarked in both directions, so clockwise is perfectly possible. However, anticlockwise is the most popular direction and the one most accommodation providers and transfer services are geared towards.

What to Expect on the Camí de Cavalls

The Camí de Cavalls route (GR 223) is a historic 184 km path that encircles the entire island of Menorca, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Balearic Islands. Originally used by soldiers and guards to patrol the coastline, the route was fully restored and waymarked as a long-distance footpath.

The terrain varies enormously around the route. The wild northern coast features rocky headlands, dramatic cliffs, pine-scented woodland, and remote coves accessible only on foot. The landscape is raw and exposed, shaped by the fierce Tramuntana wind. By contrast, the southern coast offers gentler walking along white sandy beaches, turquoise coves, and through ravine gorges thick with Mediterranean vegetation.

Menorca's compact size means you are never far from a town or village, though some sections of the route — particularly along the north coast — feel wonderfully remote. Wildlife is plentiful: red kites, Egyptian vultures, Balearic lizards, and a rich variety of Mediterranean flora. Spring brings carpets of wildflowers, while autumn offers warm seas and quieter paths.

The Camí de Cavalls route is not technically difficult — there are no sustained mountain climbs — but the constant undulation along the coast, combined with rocky and sandy terrain, makes it more demanding than the headline statistics might suggest. Good footwear and adequate water are essential, particularly on exposed northern sections where shade and supplies can be scarce.

The Best Time to Walk the Camí de Cavalls

The Camí de Cavalls route can be walked throughout the year, though the island's Mediterranean climate means some seasons are far more comfortable than others.

Spring, particularly April and May, is the ideal time. Temperatures are warm without being intense, the island is green and wildflower-covered, the sea sparkles and the trail is largely free of the summer tourist crowds.

June is still excellent but marks the beginning of the busy season. July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures regularly exceeding 30°C on exposed sections. Walking is still possible but demands early starts, plenty of water and sun protection.

September and October are arguably the most rewarding months of all. The summer heat softens, the crowds thin dramatically, the sea is still warm enough to swim, and the light along the north coast takes on a wonderful quality.

November through to March is quiet and mild by northern European standards, though some facilities close outside the season. Walking in winter gives you the island almost entirely to yourself.

Getting There & Transport

How do I get to the start of the trail?All walkers arrive via Menorca Airport (MAH), near Maó in the east of the island.

By planeDirect flights connect Menorca Airport with Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, and various European cities. From the UK, there are seasonal direct services from several regional airports, particularly in summer.

Maó as a startThe airport is just 10–15 minutes from Maó town centre by taxi or bus (line 10), making it a very convenient starting point if you begin the trail there.

Ciutadella as a startThere is no direct bus from the airport to Ciutadella — take line 10 to Maó bus station, then line 01 to Ciutadella. The total journey takes around 90 minutes and costs approximately €8.10. A taxi takes around 45 minutes and costs approximately €56–65.

How do I get back at the end?Since the Camí de Cavalls is a circular route, you finish where you began — making the return journey straightforward. Ciutadella and Maó are both main transport hubs for island buses, with regular connections back to the airport. A taxi from either town to the airport is the quickest option if you're on a tight schedule.
