How Long Does the GR221 Route Take?
The GR221 runs approximately 137 km (86 miles) from Port d'Andratx to Port de Pollença along the spine of Mallorca's Serra de Tramuntana, with around 5,200 m of ascent. How long it takes depends entirely on how you choose to travel it. Based on averaging 8 hours a day on the trail, here's what to expect.
Most walkers complete the GR221 as a self-guided walk in 8 to 10 days, covering 14 to 20 km per day with overnight stops in villages and mountain refuges. This is the classic pace: unhurried enough to enjoy the Mediterranean views, the dry stone craftsmanship and long lunches in Deià or Valldemossa.
For those who move light and fast, fastpacking the GR221 in around 5 days is a popular challenge, with 25 to 39 km days and serious climbing on rocky mountain terrain.
At the sharp end, experienced trail runners tackle the whole route in as few as 4 days, covering 31 to 39 km a day. It's a serious undertaking that combines endurance, mountain skills and heat management.
