The Alta Via 1 route in four days is a serious undertaking — 28–30 km per day across some of the Dolomites' most demanding terrain, with over 6,000m of cumulative ascent. It combines endurance, technical mountain skills, and mental resilience. Carry light, move fast, and experience one of the great trail running challenges in Europe. Day-by-Day Route Breakdown

Day 1: Lago di BraiesRifugio Scotoni Hütte

A massive opening day from Lago di Braies, climbing steeply to Forcella sora Forno and past Rifugio Biella. Across the Sennes plateau, descending to Pederü before climbing into the Fanes plateau. Past Rifugio Fanes and along old WW1 military roads through idyllic pastures, past Lago di Limo, then the steep Forcella di Lago at 2,486m and dramatic switchback descent to Lago Lagazuoi and Rifugio Scotoni.

Day 2: Rifugio Scotoni HütteRifugio Passo Staulanza

Through moon-like terrain to Forcella Lagazuoi at 2,573m with WW1 tunnels and fortifications, past Rifugio Lagazuoi at 2,752m. Descending past Passo Falzarego, climbing to Rifugio Averau, then across Passo Giau's alpine meadows. Southeast to Forcella Giau and the Mondeval grasslands with commanding views of Monte Pelmo, past Rifugio Città di Fiume to Passo Staulanza.

Day 3: Rifugio Passo StaulanzaRifugio Passo Duran

A steep climb to Rifugio Coldai, then Forcella Coldai reveals stunning Lago Coldai and the first views of Civetta's legendary 'Wall of Walls.' Traversing beneath Civetta to Rifugio Vazzoler among ancient trees, through enormous boulders to Rifugio Carestiato beneath Moiazza. A straightforward descent to the twin refuges at Passo Duran at 1,601m.

Day 4: Rifugio Passo DuranLa Pissa

The final push through the wild Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park. Past WW1 ruins to Rifugio Pramperet, then the most brutal climb — gradients exceeding 25% to Forcella de Zita Sud at 2,395m. The extremely steep descent to Rifugio Pian de Fontana, traversing Val Vescovà past Rifugio Bianchet, and the final descent through dense woodland to La Pissa — a triumphant finish to an epic four-day run through the Dolomites.
