    Day-by-Day Route Breakdown

    Day 1: UlverstonConiston

    25.1 km / 15.6 mi · 490m↑ · 465m↓ · 6h 18m

    The Cumbria Way begins at The Gill car park, climbing through rolling farmland with stiles over drystone walls. Pass Broughton Beck and continue northward as the landscape turns wilder, skirting Tottlebank Height and climbing to Beacon Tarn with panoramic views of the Coniston Fells. Descend through heather and bilberry to Coniston Water's lakeshore, following ancient twisted oaks and pines into Coniston village, a shorter first day leaving energy in reserve for the big stages ahead.

    Day 2: ConistonRosthwaite

    A substantial day through the Lake District's finest valleys. Head northeast through Yewdale to reach Tarn Hows, then descend to Skelwith Bridge and follow the River Brathay to Elterwater Common. Push through Chapel Stile and deep into Great Langdale beneath the towering Langdale Pikes. Tackle the steep climb over Stake Pass, the trail's most dramatic crossing, then descend through the remote Langstrath valley past waterfalls and Black Moss Pot wild swimming spot to arrive at Rosthwaite.

    Day 3: RosthwaitePeter House Farm

    Follow the River Derwent through Borrowdale's woodland, past the double-arched bridge at Grange, and along Derwentwater's western shore to reach Keswick. From town, climb beneath the imposing Lonscale Crags with spectacular views across to the Helvellyn range, then traverse open fellside to Skiddaw House at 470m. Continue past the impressive Whitewater Dash waterfall as the path descends through pastureland to reach Peter House Farm.

    Day 4: Peter House FarmCarlisle

    The longest day through gentler but rewarding terrain. Thread through the hamlets of Longlands, Branthwaite and Fellside before descending to Caldbeck with its welcoming Oddfellows Arms and Priest's Mill. Then follow the River Caldew downstream through wildflower meadows, past Sebergham's ancient church and through Lime House Wood. Resupply in Dalston before the riverside path carries you into the heart of Carlisle to finish at the Market Cross.
