    Hebridean Way

    Scotland · Outer Hebrides
    Hilly

A 250km route through the Outer Hebrides from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis, linking the islands by trail and ferry. The route crosses wild Atlantic beaches of white sand, machair grasslands rich with wildflowers, and exposed peat moorland. Expect remote stretches with limited shelter, strong Atlantic winds, and a landscape shaped by sea and sky. Gaelic culture is strong throughout, with traditional crofting communities and ancient standing stones at Callanish. Accommodation can be limited, so advance booking is essential.

Midge Season: Late May – Mid September

Highland midges can be a serious nuisance on this trail from late May through August in still, damp conditions. The first three weeks of May are generally midge-free. Midges start to decline from mid-September. Consider carrying a head-net and repellent if hiking from late May onwards.
