A 128km trail from Drymen to Pitlochry through the Trossachs and Highland Perthshire, following routes associated with the 18th-century outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. The way passes along the shores of Loch Venachar and Loch Lubnaig, through the forests of Strathyre, and over moorland passes with views of Ben Vorlich and Schiehallion. Expect a mix of forest tracks, lochside paths, and open hillside with good accommodation in small towns and villages along the route. A fine alternative to busier Highland trails.
Highland midges can be a serious nuisance on this trail from late May through August in still, damp conditions. The first three weeks of May are generally midge-free. Midges start to decline from mid-September. Consider carrying a head-net and repellent if hiking from late May onwards.
