    Camino Primitivo

    Spain · Asturias/Galicia
    Challenging

The original Camino route covering 320km from Oviedo through the rugged mountains of Asturias and into Galicia — hillier and wilder than the Camino Francés. The route was first walked by King Alfonso II in the 9th century. It crosses mountain passes with views to the Picos de Europa, descends through chestnut forests, and joins the Francés at Melide for the final approach to Santiago. Expect fewer services, more solitude, and a strong sense of pilgrimage heritage. Mountain sections can be foggy and wet. Accommodation requires some planning.
