    Ruta de la Plata

    Spain · Western Spain
    Hilly

A 480km route following the ancient Roman Via de la Plata from Seville to Santiago de Compostela through western Spain. The trail passes through the Roman ruins of Mérida, the medieval city of Cáceres, and the university town of Salamanca. Expect long stretches through the dehesa — rolling countryside of cork oaks and grazing bulls — with vast skies and few other walkers. Extremadura's spring wildflowers and birdlife are exceptional, with storks, vultures, and eagles common. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C, making spring and autumn preferable.
