A 360km trail through the Transylvanian Carpathians past medieval Saxon villages with fortified churches, through dense forests that are home to Europe's largest brown bear population, and across mountain meadows grazed by shepherds. Expect a mix of forest trails, ridge walks, and quiet lanes through villages where horse-drawn carts are still common. The Saxon villages of Viscri, Biertan, and Saschiz are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Accommodation in village guesthouses offers authentic Romanian hospitality and home-cooked food. Bear-safe food storage practices are important in forested areas.
