A 130km historic trans-alpine route over the Splügen Pass from Thusis in Switzerland to Chiavenna in Italy. The trail follows ancient mule tracks and Roman roads through the dramatic Viamala Gorge, over the windswept pass, and down through Italian alpine valleys. Expect narrow gorge paths, exposed mountain terrain, and a dramatic transition from German-speaking Swiss culture to Mediterranean Italian villages. The descent into Chiavenna is particularly rewarding as the climate warms and chestnut trees replace alpine meadows.
