A 270km traverse through remote alpine valleys in Piedmont, passing through traditional Occitan and Walser communities that maintain distinct languages and cultures. The route crosses high passes between deep valleys that radiate from the main Alpine chain, with views towards the Po Plain. Expect quiet trails, basic posto tappa (overnight shelters) in tiny hamlets, and a genuine sense of stepping back in time. The GTA is less visited than Swiss or French Alpine routes, offering solitude and cultural richness. Mountain experience and self-sufficiency are important.
