A 100km 'Witches' Trail' through the Harz Mountains from Osterode to Thale, crossing the Brocken — Germany's most legendary summit at 1141m. The route passes through spruce forests, old mining towns, and the dramatic Bode Gorge, with connections to witchcraft folklore (Walpurgis Night) and Goethe's Faust. Expect well-maintained paths, narrow-gauge steam railway crossings, and historic towns like Goslar (a UNESCO World Heritage site). The Harz was divided by the inner-German border until 1989, and remnants of the border infrastructure are still visible. An atmospheric trail rich in both nature and history.
