A 170km ridge trail along the Thuringian Forest from Hörschel near Eisenach to Blankenstein on the Bavarian border. The Rennsteig is Germany's oldest and most celebrated long-distance path, following the watershed ridge through dense spruce and beech forest. The route passes the Grosser Beerberg (982m, Thuringia's highest point) and crosses the former inner-German border. Expect well-maintained forest paths, traditional Gasthäuser for accommodation, and Thuringian sausage specialities. The trail has deep cultural significance — it once marked territorial boundaries and trade routes. Walkable year-round, though winters can be snowy.
