A 154km ridge walk through the Rothaar Mountains in the Sauerland from Brilon to Dillenburg, following the watershed between the Rhine and Weser river systems. The route passes through ancient beech forests, crosses moorland, and visits the source of several rivers including the Eder and Lahn. Expect well-maintained paths through one of Germany's largest contiguous forest areas, with regular villages and Gasthäuser for refreshment. The Sauerland's rolling forested hills offer tranquil walking away from busy Alpine trails. The Rothaarsteig is particularly beautiful in autumn when the beech forests turn golden.
