A 112km trail through the dramatic sandstone pillars and table mountains of Saxon Switzerland that inspired Romantic-era painters including Caspar David Friedrich. The route crosses the Bastei bridge perched above the Elbe valley, passes through narrow rock crevices, and climbs to flat-topped mesa summits with panoramic views. Expect ladders and metal steps on steeper sections, well-maintained paths through pine and birch forest, and the Elbe River providing a constant reference point. The rock formations create an otherworldly landscape. Good food and accommodation in the small towns along the Elbe valley.
