Often described as Britain's oldest road, this 139km national trail follows ancient chalk ridges from Overton Hill near Avebury to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. The western half crosses open downland through the North Wessex Downs, passing the Uffington White Horse, Wayland's Smithy, and Barbury Castle hillfort. The eastern half follows the Chiltern escarpment through beechwoods. The terrain is mostly gentle and the walking is straightforward. Rich in prehistoric sites, this is a walk through thousands of years of human history.
