A 170km circuit of the dramatic Vercors plateau — a vast limestone fortress rising abruptly from the Rhône valley. The route traverses deep gorges, crosses the wild Hauts Plateaux nature reserve (one of the largest roadless areas in France), and passes through cliff-edge villages. Expect karst terrain with sinkholes and dry valleys, limited water on the plateau, and a strong sense of remoteness in the interior. The Vercors has a significant WWII resistance history, with memorials along the route. Vultures have been reintroduced and circle overhead.
